14. What is a ‘place of residence’ affidavit, and how is it different from address proof?
These terms are often used interchangeably. Both refer to a sworn declaration of the deponent’s residential address. A ‘place of residence’ affidavit may sometimes be more specific — declaring that the deponent resides in a particular constituency, district, or state for purposes such as domicile certificate applications, school admissions under local quotas, or government scheme eligibility.
15. Can an affidavit alone establish domicile for reservations or government jobs?
An affidavit of residence is usually a supporting document for domicile certificate applications, not a standalone document to establish domicile. If you are an Indian citizen residing abroad and need an address proof affidavit for a transaction in India, you can: (1) Execute the affidavit before the Indian Consulate or Embassy in the country of your residence; (2) Execute it before a local Notary in the foreign country and get it apostilled; (3) Alternatively, if a family member resides at your last known Indian address, they can execute the affidavit in India stating your address.
